Description

You will receive one established & healthy Calathea makoyana, commonly called Peacock Plant, in its 4″ or 6″ nursery pot with soil. The 4″ size option averages 6″ tall by 6″ wide in its nursery pot when shipped. The 6″ size option averages 10″ high by 10″ wide in their pots when shipped. Calathea Makoyana is a bold & distinctive member of the Maranta family which is often chosen for its exciting appearance. This plant also goes by the name “Peacock Plant”, given for its stunning patterning & coloration. Makoyana’s light green leaves are brilliantly colored with a deeper olive green pattern, resembling the feathers of an exotic bird. As the leaves are inspected closer, intricately & finely drawn stripes are revealed within the light green areas of the leaves. Calatheas are members of the Marantaceae family, also called the Maranta, or Prayer Plant family. Many species of Prayer Plants feature leaf undersides of solid maroon. Makoyana is a bit different in this regard, as its brilliant patterning is visible on both the top & underside of the leaf. This trait is what gives the plant its name “Cathedral Windows”, & holding a Makoyana leaf up to the light will illustrate this effect. As a Prayer Plant, Calathea Makoyana will fold its leaves each evening, allowing you to enjoy its spectacular patterning from a different perspective. Light Calathea Makoyana will thrive in medium to bright indirect light. As with all types of Calathea, avoid lighting extremes, such as direct sun & dark corners. Direct sunlight can burn these plants, causing Calathea’s vibrant coloration & patterning to fade. Calathea’s in the wild are found growing on the floors of tropical rainforests. This environment can be mimicked in the home by placing the plant in a sunny yet shaded area, or a spot which receives medium to bright indirect light. Water & Soil Calathea’s like to be kept evenly moist. These plants do not like their soil to dry out, & like most all plants, are susceptible to root rot if their soil remains too wet or soggy. Calathea Makoyana should be watered once the top layer of the soil becomes dry. Amending a standard well-draining potting soil with peat moss or coco coir will help to keep your plants roots evenly moist, while the addition of perlite will ensure that proper drainage & root aeration are provided. Temperature & Humidity Calathea’s prefer room temperatures between 65 degrees F & 75 degrees F. Temperatures shouldn’t drop below 60 degrees as this could damage the foliage. Cold, drafty areas should be avoided. Calathea Makoyana prefers moderate to high humidity levels. If your home is on the drier side, misting your Calathea a few times a week will provide humidity. Calathea’s tend to be happier & healthier in areas with higher humidity, so if you have a bathroom or kitchen with bright to medium indirect light, this may be the ideal spot for your Calathea. Use of a humidifier or pebble tray can also work to create the humid environment this plant
